Not all eggs are created equal. An egg sitting on a grocery shelf for three weeks isn’t the same as one collected this morning at Ekow Sams. Here’s how you can tell the difference:
- The Float Test: Place your egg in a bowl of water. Fresh eggs sink and lay flat. If it tilts or floats, it’s old—the air pocket inside has grown too large.
- The Yolk Color: Look for a deep, vibrant orange. Pale yellow yolks often come from hens with a poor diet. Our orange yolks come from nutrient-rich, natural feed.
- The “White” Strength: Crack an egg on a flat surface. A fresh egg has a thick, cloudy white that stays close to the yolk. If it spreads out like water, it’s lost its freshness.
- The Shell Texture: Fresh farm eggs have a slightly textured, matte shell. A shiny, smooth shell is often a sign of age or heavy industrial washing.
- The Smell: A fresh egg should have absolutely no scent.
